Éric Alfred Leslie Satie (*17 de mayo de 1866 en Honfleur, † 1 de julio de 1925 en París), Erik Satie para abreviar, fue un compositor francés que -en la estela del Romanticismo tardío, el Impresionismo que le rodeaba y el estallido del Expresionismo- supo mantenerse fiel a sí mismo y a su visión de la música y crear y conservar un estilo muy propio.
Erik Satie podría describirse como el satírico entre los compositores del cambio de siglo. Sus piezas son cortas, sencillas y casi minimalistas, sólo para dar lugar a instrucciones y títulos de interpretación más largos y dadaístas. Aquí Satie posiblemente satiriza la moda emergente en la época de dar a los intérpretes instrucciones más detalladas como ›Adagio‹ o ›Allegro moderato‹ en lugar de instrucciones convencionales como ›Andante très expressif‹ y ›morendo jusq'à la fin‹ (›Andante muy expresivo‹ y ›Exhalando hasta el final‹, de Clair de lune de C. Debussy) o ›Allegro moderato‹. Debussy) o ›Mouvement de Valse très modéré‹ (›Movimiento de vals muy moderado‹, de Ma mère l'oye No. IV de M. Ravel) a la mano.
Sin embargo, – las instrucciones para tocar de Satie suenan así:
›Conseillez-vous soigneusement‹ (›Consulte cuidadosamente‹)
›De manière à obtenir un creux‹ (›Con el fin de obtener un hueco‹) o
›Dans une saine supériorité‹ (›En sana superioridad‹
[todos de Gnossienne)]
El séptimo baile de Danses Gothique se titula: ›Par pitié pour les ivrognes, honteux, débauchés, imparfaits, désagréables et faussaires en tous genres‹, que puede traducirse como ›Por piedad para los borrachos, avergonzados, disolutos, imperfectos, desagradables y farsantes de todo tipo‹.
Sin embargo, también hay composiciones no ironizadas en el Œuvre de Satie. Además de sus obras para piano, Satie publicó tres partituras de ballet y el drama sinfónico Socrate, así como la misa Messe des pauvres (›Armenmesse‹), y una pieza para violín y piano titulada Choses vues à Droite et à Gauche - sans lunettes (›Vistas a derecha e izquierda - sin gafas‹), así como algunas obras/canciones vocales.
