Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (en francés Frédéric François Chopin, en polaco Fryderyk Chopin, más raramente Szopen (*22 de febrero o 1 de marzo de 1810 en Zelazowa Wola, † 17 de octubre de 1849 en París). Octubre de 1849 en París), Frédéric Chopin para abreviar, fue un compositor, pianista y profesor de piano polaco del periodo romántico que floreció en su país de adopción, Francia, entre 1815 y 1848.
Chopin, conocido sobre todo por su música para piano, aprovechaba al máximo las posibilidades tonales y técnicas de este instrumento y exigía a sus intérpretes un uso específico de los pedales, un toque sensible (facilité »ligereza«) y una práctica musical orgánica alejada del ›taladro de dedos‹ mecánico, sino más bien una práctica guiada por la propia música al estilo del ideal vocal italiano Belcanto.
De sus aproximadamente 230 obras conservadas, la mayoría son música puramente para piano: Baladas, nocturnos, sonatas, valses (como su Vals en do sostenido menor, Op. 64 nº 2), sus preludios 24 Préludes, Op. 28 y varios géneros más. También hay dos conciertos para piano, unas 19 canciones (Op. 74) y un poco de música orquestal, como por ejemplo el »Krakowiak« Concierto Rondó para piano y orquesta en fa mayor, Op. 14.
