Es hora de tocar las trompetas, hacer sonar los saxofones y desatar la lluvia de confeti, porque uno de los más grandes compositores del siglo XX, Henry Mancini, habría cumplido 100 años este año. Pero, ¿quién demonios es Henry Mancini?
Enrico Nicola Mancini (* 16 de abril de 1924 en Cleveland, † 14 de junio de 1994 en Beverly Hills), o Henry Mancini para abreviar, era hijo de una pareja de inmigrantes italo-estadounidenses. Animado desde muy pronto por su padre músico Quinto Mancini (que en realidad era obrero siderúrgico), Henry aprendió a tocar el flautín y la flauta. Pronto le siguió el piano, y Henry Mancini descubrió su pasión por el jazz y la música swing y la big band. Con una excelente formación en la renombrada Juillard School of Music, su camino le llevó a la Glenn Miller Band tras la guerra y posteriormente (a través de unos años de aprendizaje rocambolescos) a los principales estudios cinematográficos de Estados Unidos. Allí ganaría cuatro Oscar por su música a lo largo de su vida.

Henry Mancini es el hombre detrás de las pegadizas melodías que han hecho tararear a generaciones de cinéfilos. Desde la encantadora melodía de »Pink Panther» hasta la ensoñadora »Moon River» de la película Desayuno en Tiffany's, Mancini creó un sinfín de clásicos que aún hoy bailan en nuestros cerebros. ¿Te habrías imaginado que esta maravillosa canción fue compuesta especialmente para la película más famosa de Audrey Hepburn?Pero no se trata sólo de la pantera rosa y el río iluminado por la luna, ¡oh no! Mancini también compuso el icónico tema de la serie de televisión »Peter Gunn» – el perfecto telón de fondo musical para un genial detective privado. Y si alguna vez has visto a un elefante marchando al compás, entonces seguro que conoces el »Baby Elephant Walk» – una pieza tan alegre y juguetona que haría sonreír hasta al alma más triste.
Proponiendo »Peter Gunn»: este tema es tan pegadizo e impulsor en su frescura, y a la vez tan despreocupado, que se convirtió en la pista perfecta para la taquillera banda de soul The Blues Brothers; tan conciso, que se diría que la pista fue escrita específicamente para Jake y su compañero de película Elwood Blues. E incluso la banda de pop industrial sampleado The Art of Noise retomó el tema y tuvo tanto éxito con él en 1986 que la banda alcanzó el número dos en las listas de baile de Estados Unidos, el número ocho en el Reino Unido, el número 14 en Canadá y el número 50 en el Billboard Hot 100. La grabación apareció en su álbum de 1986 In Visible Silence y fue galardonada con un Grammy a la Mejor Interpretación Instrumental de Rock. (¡Gracias a Henry Mancini!) Por si fuera poco, otros grandes como Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jeff Beck y Roy Buchanan (por nombrar sólo algunos del género rock/soul) también han retomado el pegadizo tema y lo han hecho suyo. Por no hablar de las cerca de 60 versiones del sector del jazz.
Henry Mancini escribió partituras para unas 80 películas. De ellas, 42 se editaron como bandas sonoras. Se editaron 33 álbumes de estudio con y por Henry Mancini, de los cuales (¡no me malinterpreten!) se publicaron unos 20 singles – una discográfica sólo hace esto si cree que realmente merece la pena. Bueno, claro que merece la pena con temas imperecederos como el tema principal de »Love Story», que no fue compuesto por nuestro protagonista (que escribió esto... bueno.... Francis Lai y Carl Sigman escribieron esta sentimental melodía, aunque se pudiera pensar que Richard Clayderman le había arrancado el tema de los dedos), sino que fue grabada con Henry Mancini y su Orquesta y así comenzó su marcha triunfal por los salones burgueses de todo el globo.
Sin embargo, reducir a Henry Mancini al género easy listening del swing, la música latina, el jazz y el soul no haría justicia a este versátil compositor. No hay más que pensar en sus magníficas partituras orquestales para la película »Lifeforce – The Mortal Menace« (por supuesto, Mancini no puede evitar el argumento sin sentido del guión).
¿Pero qué hace que la música de Mancini sea tan única? Bueno, es esa seductora mezcla de elegancia y ligereza lo que hace que sus composiciones sean tan inolvidables. Sus melodías son como un cóctel especial: perfectamente equilibradas, con una pizca de swing y una gran porción de encanto.
