Johann Sebastian Bach (*31 de marzo de 1685 en Eisenach, † 28 de julio de 1750 en Leipzig) es sin duda uno de los compositores más famosos, más importantes y más influyentes del siglo XVIII para las generaciones posteriores. Con sus habilidades autodidactas y adquiridas, Bach imprimió su propio e inconfundible sello al estilo barroco; saboreando las posibilidades armónicas del círculo completo de quintas, elaborando voces polifónicas en pie de igualdad, diseñando fugas matemáticamente correctas y al mismo tiempo musicalmente vivas: toda la obra de Bach refleja un conocimiento infalible de la composición que no tiene parangón.
Bach se benefició sin duda de su sólida formación como pianista, organista y violinista, que le permitió combinar un virtuosismo juguetón con una inspiración ingeniosa y una destreza estilísticamente segura. Por eso resulta tan sorprendente que las obras de Bach no fueran reconocidas más allá de su ámbito geográfico de influencia durante su vida. No fue hasta unos 80 años después de la muerte de Bach cuando su música experimentó un renacimiento, impulsado por el arreglo e interpretación de la Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244, por Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy en una versión abreviada. Es por tanto gracias a Mendelssohn que esta Pasión a dos voces es una de las obras de Semana Santa más interpretadas en la actualidad.
El innovador empeño de Bach fue componer y publicar una colección de preludios y fugas que ‚conducen a través de todos los tonos y semitonos‘, es decir, a través de todas las tonalidades del círculo de quintas: El
Clavier bien temperado, BWV 846-893. Por un lado, Bach demostró que con la ayuda de la afinación alterada de tono medio III de Andreas Werckmeister, ahora era posible tocar en todas las claves en un instrumento de teclado sin que la quinta de lobo estropeara el disfrute musical del oyente; por otro lado, el objetivo de Bach era demostrar de esta manera las características individuales de las claves, que, debido a los intervalos aún desiguales de los pasos de semitono, a veces parecen armónicamente puras, a veces casi desagradablemente ‚desafinadas‘ y, por tanto, pueden crear mundos emocionales diferentes.
La afinación de temperamento igual estándar de los pianos de cola de concierto de hoy en día sólo puede reproducir este efecto de forma limitada, si es que lo hace, y la intención de Bach lamentablemente se pierde un poco aquí. No obstante, el Clavier bien temperado es sin duda tan importante como El arte de la fuga, BWV 1080 y el Variaciones Goldberg, BWV 988 se encuentran entre las obras más importantes y significativas que ofrece la literatura pianística.
Las cantatas eclesiásticas que se vio obligado a componer como consecuencia de sus contratos de servicio en Weimar y más tarde en Leipzig han entrado en el vocabulario actual como Cantatas de Bach. Las cerca de 200 obras de varios movimientos para coro (normalmente), orquesta con B.C. y solistas vocales (a menudo en armonía con un instrumento solista) sobre un tema eclesiástico específico que han sobrevivido siguen garantizando que las emisoras de radio clásicas puedan emitir una cantata diferente cada domingo a lo largo del año, en consonancia con el calendario eclesiástico. A veces la instrumentación es menor; también hay cantatas de Bach que se conforman con un solo vocalista, un instrumento y bajo continuo – el trasfondo de estas composiciones está abierto a la especulación.
