John Milford Rutter (nacido el 24 de septiembre de 1945 en Londres), o John Rutter para abreviar, es uno de los compositores contemporáneos de música coral más conocidos.
Mientras aún estudiaba música en Cambridge, Rutter creó sus primeras obras corales y las grabó con el Clare College Choir bajo su dirección. Entre ellas se incluyen el popular „Shepherd's Pipe Carol“ (compuesto a los 18 años) y su „Gloria“ para coro mixto, vientos, percusión y órgano, estrenada en 1974.
Su talento y habilidades musicales le valieron a John Rutter el puesto de Director de Música en el Clare College a la edad de 30 años – esto a su vez ayudó al coro del colegio a dar el salto a la escena internacional bajo la dirección de John Rutter.
Tras sólo cuatro años en el cargo, Rutter decidió abandonar su puesto en 1979 y centrarse plenamente en su labor compositiva y artística, por ejemplo como productor de grabaciones para el coro de cámara Cambridge Singers (que fundó a partir de antiguos miembros del coro del colegio).
„Un „contempor‘ compositor: ¿puede escucharse y cantarse la música coral de Rutter?“ „¡Por supuesto!
Quienes piensan en la música „contemporánea“ sólo en términos de composiciones estrictamente seriales y desarmónicas no hacen justicia a este adjetivo. Desde los años 70, el anhelo de armonías claras, estructuras melodiosas y ritmos interesantes (pero no demasiado difíciles) ha llevado al desarrollo de un nuevo estilo musical en la música coral y eclesiástica en particular (¡pero no sólo!), que ha insuflado una vida completamente nueva al ya poco manejable atributo „contemporáneo“. Así pues, la música de John Rutter también puede clasificarse como „posmoderna“, que se dirige, entre otras cosas, contra los principios rígidos y las formas compositivas.Una técnica de la música posmoderna, por ejemplo, consiste en inspirarse en estilísticas, elementos y estructuras de otras épocas y géneros y desarrollarlos hábilmente en un estilo personal con ideas musicales propias. Esto también se puede encontrar en las obras de John Rutter, que fueron creadas conscientemente bajo la influencia de la música coral y catedralicia tradicional inglesa, salpicada de elementos de formas musicales populares.

Además, la música de John Rutter desprende una energía positiva casi en todo momento. Incluso su misa „Mass of the Children“ (estrenada en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York en 2003), que John Rutter compuso con motivo de la muerte de su hijo en un accidente de tráfico cuando sólo tenía 19 años, transmite un optimismo inquebrantable.
