Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (*23 de abril de 1891 en la finca Sontsovka, † 5 de marzo de 1953 en Moscú), o Sergei Prokofiev para abreviar, fue un compositor y pianista del Imperio ruso y de la posterior Unión Soviética.
El estilo de Prokofiev es tan diverso como las estaciones geográficas de su vida (Rusia, EE.UU., Francia, Alemania, URSS) y sin duda refleja a veces las respectivas condiciones de vida, como sus obras armónicamente moderadas de finales de los años cuarenta y principios de los cincuenta, que creó bajo la ›supervisión› soviética en conformidad con el régimen y cerca del pueblo.
Al mismo tiempo, sin embargo, Prokófiev sintió durante toda su vida la necesidad de explorar las distintas tendencias de la época (P. habla de ›líneas‹), desde la clásica hasta la moderna, e incorporarlas a su música. El resultado es un Œuvre que lleva la firma inconfundible del compositor y que, al mismo tiempo, difícilmente puede superarse en cuanto a su riqueza de facetas.
