Written as a tribute to the great lead alto player Johnny Hodges, this chart uses the conventional harmonic and rhythmic language of the era. Basically a blues with a bridge 'Hodge' develops in a conventional manner with space for two soloists and a rousing shout chorus to set up the last statement of the head. With even a young rhythm section, 'Hodge' should set up a great 'laid-back' groove and be a great deal of fun to play. All sections of the band get to play an integral part with the rhythm section and saxes features. Written for 2 altos, 2 tenors, baritone, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, acoustic bass, drums and optional guitar. This piece should be an enjoyable addition to the repertoire of all bands ranging from high school bands, of a reasonable standard, to professional outfits.
