Das kleine Stück Paralipomenon für Streichquartett entstand, nach einer sehr spontanen Inspiration und in relativ kurzer Zeit, während der mentalen Vorbereitung auf die Komposition meines Ersten Streichquartetts, das formal und im Verlauf der verschiedenen Gestalten von Expressivität bereits feststand. Paralipomenon war vor Beginn der Komposition des Ersten Streichquartetts als dessen 'geheime Antwort', dessen 'innere Substanz' gedacht; obgleich jenes die imaginäre Fortführung, ein Appendix, von diesem sein und demnach zu dessen integralem Bestandteil gehören sollte, war Absicht, es als eigenständiges Werk vom Charakter eines Nachtrags zu konzipieren, das somit nicht unmittelbar nach dem Ersten Streichquartett erklingen dürfte. Paralipomenon ist somit eine Antizipation seiner Funktion während eines Zeitpunkts, zu welchem das, worauf es sich bezieht, noch nicht existierte. Musikalisch ist an ein formal monolithisches, stets in der Klanglichkeit der jeweils vierten Saite gehaltenes, die Oberstimmen nacheinander ablösendes Kontinuum gedacht, das instantan beginnt und, einen in sich geschlossenen Spannungsbogen vollziehend, ebenso instantan endet. --------------------------------------------------------- The short piece Paralipomenon, for string quartet, was composed after a very spontaneous inspiration and in a relatively short space of time during my mental preparation for the composition of my First String Quartet, for which the form and the sequence of different manifestations of expressivity were already fixed. Paralipomenon was envisaged before the composition of the First String Quartet as its 'secret reply', its 'inner substance'; although the former was intended as the imaginary continuation of the latter, an appendix, and hence meant to form an integral part of it, the idea was to conceive it as an independent work with the character of an addendum that could not be played directly after the First String Quartet. Paralipomenon was thus an anticipation of its function at a time when the entity on which it was based did not yet exist. Musically speaking, the aim was to create a formally monolithic continuum that uses the sonority of all instruments' fourth strings throughout, and consecutively takes over from the upper voices; it begins instantaneously and, tracing a closed tension curve, ends equally instantaneously.
