Peter Sculthorpe

From Nourlangie

From Nourlangie is, like much of Peter Sculthorpe’s work, inspired by the Australian landscape and coastline; the piece is inspired by material from his guitar concerto Nourlangie (1989), which refers to great monolith in the Kakadu National Park, as well as traditional Indonesian music, which is evoked in the piano part. The 4-minute piece for piano quartet begins with a slow introduction, before offering three statements of its principal melody, which grow in intensity. This version, which comprises the score and piano part, was made to celebrate David Matthews’ 50th birthday in 1993.
