Undeterred by the compositional changes of her time - from classical forms to romantic program music - Emilie Mayer wrote her trios and sonatas based on the classical sonata form. In later composed sonatas, this is interpreted more freely; the harmonic structure also becomes more complex and the variety of sound greater. The scope of the works, the equal role of the instruments as well as the demands on the instrumentalists correspond to those of their composing contemporaries and are in no way inferior to their romantic ductus of the same genre.
