Descripción de la:
Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbariae or "the triumphant Juditha who defeats the barbarian Holofernes" is the title of Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio. It takes up the plot of the apocryphal biblical book Judith. In it, the Hebrew widow Juditha defeats the Assyrian general Holofernes, who besieges her hometown of Bethulia. The oratorio was intended by the audience to be understood as an allegory for the victory of the naval power of Venice over the Ottoman Empire. The choice of the deeply religious Juditha as a heroine was certainly also due to the all-female ensembles of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, whose maestro de' concerti Vivaldi was active. With the female musicians, who were famous far beyond the city limits for their excellence, he performed the premiere in 1716/17. In addition to the common instruments of the time, the impressively rich instrumentation of the oratorio also includes mandolin, viola da gamba, theorbo and chalumeau. The Urtext edition, edited by Berthold Over, offers flexible and practice-oriented performance material, so that music can be played with both original and modern instruments. A work that can be performed not only by oratorio choirs but also in an opera context – and the only surviving major sacred work for choir and orchestra by Vivaldi.
