The waltz Unter Palmen und Blumen (Under Palm Trees and Flowers) by the Bohemian composer Ludwig Stasny (1823-1883) is of comparable quality to the famous waltzes of his still famous Viennese colleagues.
After studying music in Prague, Stasny became the conductor of a traveling military band, the "Stasny Kapelle". After various assignments at the Mainz Opera and a series of other musical tours, the Palmengarten-Gesellschaft appointed him Music Director of the Palmengarten Orchestra in Frankfurt am Main, a position he held from 16 March 1871 until his death in 1883.
March 16, 1871 is also the birth date of the Palmengarten and the Palmengarten-Gesellschaft, which is now famous far beyond its headquarters in Frankfurt. The official opening celebrations of the Palmengarten took place after the end of the Franco-German War of 1870-71.
Since its inception, the Palmengarten has attracted visitors not only with its collection of exotic plants, but also with its many concerts and events. A musician of the calibre of Ludwig Stasny was therefore requested for the position of Music Director. At that time he was extraordinarily popular in all regions thanks to the numerous dances he composed and the arrangements by Wagner. From the mid-19th century he was considered one of the most important composers of the Mainz publishing house, Schott.
Stasny composed Unter Palmen und Blumen especially for the opening of the Palmengarten-Gesellschaft and his orchestral version of the waltz was performed in the banquet hall while the celebration meal was served.
This edition is a new arrangement for violin and piano commissioned for the 150th anniversary of the Palmengarten. The arrangement is based on the orchestral version op. 161 and on the piano version op. 157, both published in 1877 by Schott in Mainz. Copies of these original prints are kept in the collection of the Mainz City Library.
