Descripción de la:

  • Acompañamiento: Piano
Joseph Haydn wrote the Symphony Hob. I:24 in D major in 1764, when he was Vice-Kapellmeister in the service of Prince Nicholas I Esterházy and before he was appointed First Kapellmeister in 1766. In the second movement, Adagio, the flute solo plays a cantabile melody, sparingly accompanied by the strings of the orchestra. This movement could also have come from a flute concerto, and so an arrangement for flute and piano is obvious.

It was written by the flutist Louis Fleury, who was born in Lyon, moved to Paris when he was fifteen, and worked there until the end of his life. After studying with Paul Taffanel, he decided - quite unusually at the time - to pursue a career as a freelance flutist. He rediscovered old music and initiated new music. Debussy's Syrinx, for example, is dedicated to him. With some published essays he contributed significantly to the acceptance of the flute as a full concert instrument in the 20th century.
