The edition presented here is an adaptation of the so-called second lute suite whose original instrumentation, however, still remains uncertain. Judging by formal aspects, this piece has more in common with the Italian Sonata di chiesa than with the suite. But as this term is still asscociated with this particular piece, it has also been kept for this edition. The arrangement closely follows the urtext of the New Bach Edition while aiming at the same time to give the bass part an individual character.
