Val is the pet name of a former student of Gerald Preinfalk named Valeria Kučan from Slovenia. She asked him for a current piece with "easy-going" modern playing techniques for her student ensemble. These particularly ambitious students between the ages of 10 and 14 had no fear of new sounds - they had fun with it!
In addition to being a pet form, "Val" also means "wave". One of the students took this fact as an opportunity to draw a cartoon to the music for a school project.
