The JODLERWINDFANTASIE (Yodelling Wind Fantasy) is a composition between tradition and innovation. In the spirit of the RUNDEL Trumpet Ensemble Project, it is not only suitable for use in concerts, but also as pedagogical literature. Gruchmann had long been concerned with the idea of using Alpine melodies as a source of inspiration and reference point for new works. The beauty and the musical richness of their special compositional techniques and harmonies characterise many folk tunes. They left their mark on Gruchmann’s musical feelings and perceptions early on. Or, as he says himself: „I am in favor of this musical tradition also being incorporated into the concert music of the 21st century.“ Therefore, his piece leads into an alpine scenery that is initially characterized as dreamy and remote. With its elaborate twists and abrupt atmosphere changes, it soon proves to be quite adventurous, too. Wind plays a “naturalistic” role in the musical dramaturgy of this crossing of the Alps. Gruchmann skillfully stages it with the help of contemporary techniques such as flutter tongue, air noises or specific trills (“bisbigliando”).
