Iron Mountain stages the legend of the Erzberg in Upper Styria in an impressive musical way. At the beginning, the atmosphere of the grotto where Aquarius lives comes alive through imitation drops of water. Aquarius is pursued and captured by humans. In his distress, he begs for freedom and makes an offer to the people: gold mines for a year, silver mines for ten years, or iron mines forever. People's clear answer is: iron forever. The finale of the composition underlines this decision with impressive anvil blows, and the Erzberg rises triumphantly into the centre of the action.
