The title of this work, Penta, suggests the musical material used for its composition. The piece, divided into three seamless sections, employs themes based on a feature typical of traditional Asian music: the pentatonic scale. In an opening aleatoric segment, the solo flute introduces the first theme, which the full band then reprises with increasing intensity. The central and more reflective section combines the pentatonic scale with a whole tone scale. The final allegro instills in musicians and audiences alike a sense of joy and celebration by superimposing compositional material already heard in the two previous sections onto the concluding theme.
