First performed in Vienna in August 1848, Johann Strauss Jr.'s Radetzky March is one of the most famous marches of all time. It is dedicated to Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz. Strauss was commissioned to write it to commemorate Radetzky's victory at the Battle of Custoza.

In addition to the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss Jr., the Radetzky March has taken on the role of the "unofficial" Austrian anthem over time. When it was first performed in front of officers, they began to beat with their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music, bringing to life a tradition that can often be seen in many concert halls when the march is performed live.

The Vienna Philharmonic always plays the march as the final piece in the famous New Year's Concert.
