The sarabande is a slow dance of Spanish origin, which is to be danced with a solemnly carried step. For those who think that the spirited Spaniards love rather fast music and flamenco, remember that they are also a very proud people. When dancing the 'sarabande' this becomes very clear: a posture with raised head and straight back is taken, no laughing and between the dance movements one keeps static full of silent tension. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was very popular to compose suites with different dances. Famous composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and also George Frideric Handel wrote many works of this kind. From the Suite No. 4 in D minor for harpsichord with the directory name HWV 437 (Händel-Werke-Verzeichnis), comes the present SARABANDA. The arrangement by Alfred Bösendorfer was especially arranged for youth wind orchestra.
