The 'big' composers from all over the world who are well known for their symphonic works, seldom wrote for wind orchestra. Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the rare and extemely valuable exceptions, with these unique variations on a theme of his fellow Russian countryman Michail Glinka. Rimsky-Korsakov, along with Balakirew, Borodin and Mussorgsky and Cui, were the founders of a sort of Russian kind of Romantic Nationalisitc music. Based in St. Petersburg they had conservatoriums in Austria, Germany, Italy and France.
