Sibelius composed the orchestral version of Höstkväll in 1904 for the soprano Aino Ackté (1876-1944) in a German translation by Ferdinand Tilgmann. The date of the premiere itself is not known, but an early performance in Paris with Minnie Tracey singing the piece under the direction of Alfred Cortot on January 14, 1905 is. It remains unclear why Sibelius prepared another version of the work with only German text for voice and string orchestra at about the same time. As far as is known, this version has not been performed before its first publication in 2003 in the Complete Edition Jean Sibelius Werke (JSW).
