In the fall of 1909, Sibelius wrote in his diary: 'At Koli! One of the greatest experiences of my life. Plans [for] 'La Montagne'! It turned out that these were plans for the Fourth Symphony. The composition process was not easy; according to the diary, Sibelius ultimately described it as a 'struggle with God'; just in time for the premiere in the spring of 1911, he managed to complete the work: 'My new symphony is a complete protest against the compositions nowadays. Nothing - absolutely nothing of the circus.' This extraordinary work was initially considered difficult to comprehend, though its technical brilliance won acclaim. Appreciation for the Fourth, however, increased over the years. Original quote: 'My new symphony is a complete protest against d. compositions nowadays. Nothing - absolutely nothing of the circus.'
