open doors by Bernd Franke is a 17-minute work for bandoneon (or accordion) and orchestra (1(Picc).1.1(Bb-/Eb-Cl).1. - 1.1.FlgHn.1.1 - Timp.3Perc - Hp - Pf - Str). It was written in April 2002 in New York City. The atmosphere of the New York subway inspired the composer to write this work. When you open the doors, you hear and see new and outstanding street musicians from all over the world in every station - a magnificent soundscape in the middle of the city. In open doors, organically proliferating, aleatoric structures repeatedly overlap with hierarchically conducted orchestral structures, and chamber music softens the orchestral action. Additionally, sounds recorded in the New York subway are integrated in the composition via audio tape. Commissioned by the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the work was premiered on 21 January 2003 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus by Per Arne Glorvigen (bandoneon) and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester, conducted by Rolf Gupta. The manuscript edition of the full score (EP 10985) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library.
