Qué bien que este aforismo no se aplique a nosotros, los humanos. De lo contrario, probablemente sólo podríamos tocar carillón o dulcimer (¡sin ánimo de ofender a los virtuosos del carillón o el dulcimer!).
Sin embargo, somos capaces de crear la más maravillosa música polifónica a partir de un único instrumento, el piano, utilizando únicamente los diez dedos que nos han sido otorgados. Desde música virginal medieval hasta preludios, fugas y sonatas, pasando por reducciones para piano de obras orquestales enteras: parece que no hay límites para el instrumento de teclado.
Música orquestal, arreglada para piano
¿No hay límites? No para el instrumento – sino para el ser humano, a pesar de sus diez dedos; porque donde los conciertos para violín u oboe de uso doméstico aún pueden interpretarse con un pianista (tocando la parte orquestal) y un solista, la interpretación de un concierto para piano y orquesta en un solo instrumento de teclado es sencillamente imposible para un solo intérprete.
La solución: arreglos para orchestrale Música para piano a cuatro manos, en la literatura también a veces con „a quattro mani“, »à quatre mains« o “cuatro manos”, es decir, de hecho para dos pianistas.
Además de los conciertos para piano, otros conciertos para solista también se arreglaban a menudo para piano a cuatro manos. Aquí, los dos pianistas comparten la parte del segundo (el acompañamiento orquestal) y la parte del primer tiempo (interpretando los pasajes solistas).
También se pueden encontrar arreglos para piano a cuatro manos de obras puramente orquestales y oberturas, así como composiciones para coro y orquesta.
