These thirty sonatas are collectively entitled Essercizi and were the first published works of Scarlatti. They appeared in 1738 and it is a striking biographical fact that previous to this, in the composer's 53rd year, no Scarlatti compositions exist that would have elevated him to his present level of historical importance.
