Robert Schumann (*8 de junio de 1810 en Zwickau, † 29 de julio de 1856 en Endenich), uno de los más importantes representantes del Romanticismo, es conocido por muchos por su extensa obra para piano y sus 150 canciones. A qué estudiante de piano no le ha cautivado Kinderszenen op. 15 de Schumann, aunque esta colección sobre momentos de la infancia no esté pensada como piezas infantiles.
Títulos como Faschingsschwank aus Wien op. 26, Album für die Jugend op. 68 o el Davidsbündlertänze op. 6 se encuentran regularmente en los carteles de conciertos y hacen referencia a un programa de Schumann, a menudo en relación con un recital de lieder, por ejemplo con Dichterliebe op. 48, de Joseph von Eichendorff Liederkreis op. 39 o el Liederkreis Myrthen op. 25, por nombrar las colecciones de canciones más conocidas de Schumann.
En la segunda mitad de su vida, sin embargo, Schumann se dedicó cada vez más a la música orquestal, de cámara y coral – la ópera Genoveva op. 81 también fue compuesta durante esta época. Ello se debió, entre otras cosas, a que Schumann se abstenía cada vez más de tocar el piano debido a una dolencia permanente en la mano derecha. También desarrolló la habilidad de esbozar sus composiciones mentalmente y plasmarlas directamente sobre el papel, creando cuatro sinfonías y cuatro oberturas, siete obras concertantes (incluyendo su Concierto para piano en la menor op. 54, cuyo tema principal es introducido por un maravilloso solo de oboe cantabile), una docena de obras corales con orquesta y 12 composiciones de música coral, así como 16 obras de música de cámara.
