The movements, still largely in the classical-early Romantic style, captivate with multifaceted viola-specific layered playing. Easy to moderately difficult.

These are lovable, playful genre pieces that serve musical entertainment in the best sense of the word. Highly recommended as an encore.

One of the newly discovered treasures of the Berlin Sing-Academy is the viola sonata in F major by Franz Benda, published here for the first time.

Inspired by the treasure of 'European love songs', the composer created a chamber-musical enchanting finely chiseled miniature, embedded in 'contemporary sounds'.

Onslow's viola sonatas deserve to be brought back into the repertoire. Technically not overly difficult, their Biedermeier melos exudes melodiousness and esprit.

Each of the 3 viola sonatas are among the pieces from which contemporaries expected a 'profoundly exciting alternation of pain and joy, of sadness and cheerfulness'.
